Personal Skills
Darren has an insatiable appetite for technology and believes in doing everything to the very best of his ability. This means that he is constantly evaluating and adopting the newest technologies while at the same time perfecting his skills with the established ones. He works well in any given scenario and is particularly good with business and end-user communication, possessing an almost tangible keenness on projects.
He also spent many years providing hardware and software solutions for small businesses and is adept at providing such firms with the ‘high end’ enterprise level functionality they require while keeping costs ‘low end’.
Summary of key projects undertaken by Darren Edge
Design And Development Of A Business Records Warehousing Application
Designing, developing and implementing an n-tier data access application in Visual Basic 6.0, for Win32 and extranet based clients to consume data residing on a clustered SQL Server 2000 database. The system utilised PSION Workabout handheld data collection devices with integrated laser scanners, Code 128 barcode printing, Win32 and web based clients and regional warehouses connected via ADSL Virtual Private Networks.
Migrating The Above Application To The .Net Platform
The .Net upgrade wizard is not a viable option when clean, highly optimised code is required that fully utilises the performance advantages and more object oriented approach that the .Net Framework offers. Hence, large portions of the above warehousing application were re-written using both VB.Net and ADO.Net.
Design And Development Of Intranet Based Global Logistics System
Worked as a developer at Enron on a logistics project that pushed DHTML to its limits (and beyond). The client accessed data from a number of different RDBMS’ around the globe and our team created a multi screen view allowing brokers to place shipment requirements with available transportation.
Providing Account Status Information To Account Managers
Designed and implemented an Excel 2000 add-in that took data from one of the company’s global Oracle accounts databases and calculated certain pieces of fiscal information for decision support purposes.
Analyzed And Improved The Security Of A Small Storage Company’s Network
This Kent based firm with approx 50 users across three sites had a network that had grown steadily over the course of 10 years with no real attention given to security and the move to an ‘always on’ broadband connection brought uninvited guests to the network. I installed and configured a Watchguard Firebox III 700 hardware firewall at the firm’s internet gateway to secure the head office. Smaller SOHO 6tc’s were then used in the two remote offices together with low cost ADSL lines to create Virtual Private Networks (VPN’s) to the HQ. This gave the company the functional equivalent of leased lines at a tiny fraction of the cost and locked down their network at the same time. The low ongoing administrative requirement of this solution was the final benefit.
